''We all need to get out of our comfort zone and take a lot more chances.''

Xavier Verdaguer, founder of Innovalley

  • Xavier Verdaguer

After having launched 6 innovative companies in Barcelona, I founded Innovalley, in Silicon Valley. A smart clothing company that combines the creativity of Barcelona with the latest American technology. We work for big-name clothing brands, developing everything from solar fabric bags that charge your mobile phone battery to GPS shoes that guide you down the street.

At the moment we’re doing very well, we’re learning a lot, and we’re having a great time.

I would like to share with you some of the lessons of what we’re learning over here:

The first lesson is that you must dream, and you have to dream big, you have to believe that you can change the world, or improve the life of your customers or your users, that ultimately it is a good way to change the world. You must dream and believe that anything is possible.

The second lesson is that you must have a positive attitude. It’s not worth complaining or blaming everything on the crisis. Here people focus on opportunities. The entrepreneurs always see opportunities where others see nothing but risks. You have to be positive and you have to pursue your dreams with optimism.

The third lesson is that you must take risks. Here the entrepreneurs dream of what will happen if they succeed, and if they fail they understand failure as part of the learning process. But it’s not only the entrepreneurs who take risks, the investors also take risks with innovative projects they believe in, especially projects of young people with talent. We all need to get out of our comfort zone and take a lot more chances.

The next concept, more than a lesson it’s a reality in this part of California, should make you stop and think. Here, more than half the people were born in some other country, there is great cultural diversity, but in this highly competitive environment everyone has the same opportunities. Here you understand that everywhere in such a globalized world we are all equal.

But my favorite lesson and the main lesson I have learned as an entrepreneur is that you should have fun with what you do. Here entrepreneurs work really hard, but they are passionate about what they do and have fun with their project.

Business should be understood as a game. Even life should be understood as a game. When we play we are much more creative and we can achieve anything.

We should play at being an entrepreneur like we did when we were children and had no limits. We must go back to being children to imagine that anything is possible.

In the end, the work of an entrepreneur consists in making dreams come true by overcoming obstacles every day. And the best way to overcome these obstacles is to do it freely, without fear of failure and as if it was a game.

And, as they say here, if you dare to dream and pursue your dreams, you’ll have fun.
