''Children already practice innovation for its own sake, but we must give them the opportunity to develop it.''

22/06/2011

We have to inspire young people. And this is the goal of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST has been successful because there was a demand.

The First Lego League competition aims to change culture, to help promote scientific careers. The objective is to get students to admire engineers, scientists, etc., the same way they admire athletes, singers and actors.

300 companies on the Fortune 500 list are sponsors of the First Lego League program. They have 15 million dollars available in scholarships for students. The sponsors aim to train young people who can then be incorporated to work in their organizations.

Any age is valid for joining FIRST. There are currently 180,000 people worldwide participating in FIRST activities. They learn how to program, how to develop ideas that turn into projects to resolve concrete challenges in the real world.

Young people say they are bored at school. They want their robot to be good, they want to compete and win with it. If we have young people who collaborate in school, people say they cheat because people think everyone should do their own thing and that’s it. In FIRST, teamwork is encouraged. A system of values is transmitted. Compete, but also collaborate. The teammates with whom you collaborate may be your rivals in other occasions.

Children already practice innovation for its own sake, but we must give them the opportunity to develop it.
