The Ecology and Development Foundation collaborated with the Prince of Girona Foundation in the calculation and compensation of Greenhouse Gas emissions to make IMPULSA 2011 a ZeroCO2 event.
How are CO2 emissions generated?
Most of the emissions generated as a result of the Forum were due to travel to and from the event by the speakers and participants.
Other sources of Greenhouse Gas emissions include paper and energy consumed for lighting and air conditioning of the spaces in which the event was held, as well as the use of electric devices.
How are the emissions calculated?
The ZeroCO2 calculation methodology has been developed from the “GHG Protocol”, itself based on the “Guidelines for the Development of National Inventories of Greenhouse Gas Emissions” of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The emissions generated by the IMPULSA Forum were calculated by the Ecology and Development Foundation, based on the data provided by the organizers of the event.
Emissions generated by the 2011 IMPULSA Forum
Travel of technicians: 4.7 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Travel of journalists: 2.8 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Travel of speakers/award winners: 18.0 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Travel of attendees: 65.9 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Paper consumption: 2.2 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Energy consumption: 2.9 tons of CO2 equivalent.
Total: 96.5 tons of CO2 equivalent
How are the emissions compensated for?
Compensation for the emissions generated by the 2011 IMPULSA Forum 2011 are accomplished through two projects: Amazon Conservation in Madre de Dios in Peru and Wind power generation in India, both included in the ZeroCO2 platform.
