Jimmy Wales: '' Wikipedia is the tip of the iceberg of a much broader movement. We have shown that people can work together to do incredible things''

Wikipedia currently has 30 million articles in 287 languages. From the outset, my dream was for every person on the planet to have free access to the sum of all human knowledge. By the end of this year, we expect to see 3 billion people online and will make sure that Wikipedia reaches every corner of the world.

One of the most interesting cases is Wikipedia in Catalan, which was the third language to appear on Wikipedia after English and German. Today it is world language no. 17 and there are 430,000 articles in Catalan.

Bearing in mind that there are 9 million Catalan speakers, the average is very high. There are, moreover, 56 editors of Wikipedia in Catalan for every million speakers, while, for example, in languages like English there are 21 and only 8 in Spanish. We nonetheless always need people to proofread or to improve articles, so I encourage you to join our community!

The Wikimedia Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation in which 200 people work. Over 550 million people around the world use the website. We are one of the most influential organisations in the world!

We now wish to go beyond Wikipedia and have therefore created WIKEA, which allows for much deeper analysis of a subject, always on a collaborative basis. These are much more specialised communities, like fans of Game of Thrones or farm tractors. They involve people who are sharing their knowledge. It is currently the world’s eighteenth most widely used website.

Wikipedia is the tip of the iceberg of a much broader movement. We have shown that people can work together to do incredible things.

The decrease in price of communication devices such as smartphones has meant they are spreading very quickly to developing countries. There, they are used to track crop prices or to warn of an outbreak of malaria, for example, although the major impact is when people use Internet, they converse globally and have access to the same knowledge.

The next billion people will be online within 5 years. This is the information revolution.
